What Is Parts Work Therapy, often referred to as Internal Family Systems (IFS)?

Have you ever felt like one part of you wants change… while another part feels terrified of it?

That is the foundation of parts work.

Parts work therapy recognizes that we all have different inner “parts” - like an inner critic, anxious part, people-pleasing part, perfectionist part, or wounded younger part.

One of the most popular and effective forms of parts work is Internal Family Systems, also known as IFS therapy.

IFS helps people understand why they react the way they do instead of shaming themselves for it.

Many therapists now combine Internal Family Systems (IFS) with:

  • EMDR therapy

  • somatic therapy

  • trauma therapy

  • attachment therapy

  • anxiety therapy

  • nervous system regulation work

Why is it so effective?

Because healing often happens when people stop fighting themselves and start understanding themselves.

Instead of asking:
“What is wrong with me?”

You begin asking:
“What is this part trying to protect me from?”

That shift can completely change how people relate to themselves, their emotions, and their healing journey.
